MARINE BIOLOGISTS BELIEVE THE BELUGA WHALE DO NOT LIKE TO BE TOUCHED BY ARTIFICIAL MATERIALS
In September 2018, a beluga whale made its way down to the Thames River. Though beluga whales travel in pods, this young whale separated from others, got nicknamed as Benny by us. I developed this work from a workshop I led at the Thames River during the time Benny was around. This was a deep listening workshop, where 'deep' was taken quite literally as in the depths of the river. With the aid of hydrophones, we listened to the water. With the lost beluga wandering the Thames, I was wondering whether it was what Benny heard of us that brought him so close? The video captures the lost beluga swirling around on the transparent grid superimposed with the recorded sound from below the city.
